Why Pea and Cream Cheese Pinwheels are Great for Toddlers

  1. Nutrient-Rich: Peas are a fantastic source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, providing essential nutrients for your toddler’s growth and development.
  2. Protein Boost: Cream cheese and cheese toppings add a protein boost to the recipe, contributing to your child’s overall nutrition.
  3. Texture Exploration: The combination of creamy pea filling and flaky crescent roll dough provides a delightful texture experience for your toddler, encouraging sensory exploration.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz steamable bag of peas
  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup parmesan or mozzarella cheese
  • 1 can crescent roll dough

How to Make Pea Cream Cheese Pinwheels for Kids

1. Steam and Blend: Steam the 12 oz bag of peas according to the package instructions. Once cooked, put the peas in a blender with 4 oz of cream cheese. Blend until smooth and creamy.

2. Prepare the Dough: Unroll the crescent dough and press any seams together to form a solid sheet. Make sure the surface is smooth so the filling stays inside while baking.

3. Spread the Filling: Spread a thin, even layer of the pea and cream cheese mixture over the dough. You won’t need the entire batch—just enough to cover the surface.

4. Add Cheese: Sprinkle Parmesan or mozzarella over the top of the pea mixture for extra flavor.

5. Roll It Up: Starting from one end, roll the dough tightly into a log.

6. Slice into Pinwheels: Cut the rolled dough into 1-inch slices using a sharp knife.

7. Bake: Place the bites on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for about 15 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.

    Substitutions

Dough: Puff pastry also works well, or even whole wheat tortillas.

Cheese: Substitute with ricotta or a dairy-free alternative.

Cream Cheese: Greek yogurt or hummus can be used for a different flavor profile.

Peas: Fresh or frozen peas work well; just make sure they’re thawed and drained.

    Storage Tips

Store any leftover pinwheels in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days, or in the freezer for 2 months. To reheat, simply pop them in the oven for a few minutes or microwave briefly until warmed through.

Leftover pea mixture can also be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months. Serve leftover mixture on another batch of pinwheels, a piece of toast, or on your favorite cracker!

My 21.5 month old loved these! He actually even loved the filling by itself, spread on low sodium Ritz crackers. Will definitely make again!

    2. Are you not supposed to use the entire pea mixture? Mine turned into gooey globs when I tried to cut it. I think next time I’ll try using maybe 1/4-1/3 of the mixture to see if that’ll be easier to roll and cut. Any tips?

I have a very picky toddler so I came across this recipe to try and he absolutely loved it! Ate it all!

      Absolutely, lovely!

I made this with my 20-month-old Granddaughter, she loves it although she hates peas. I made the blended peas the night before and stored them in the fridge so she does not know it’s peas.

It’s moist and not dry, although the peas’ texture is more olive colour after baking. I will try other steamed vegs too.

These are amazing and have become a staple for us! We switch up with different veggies too.

      Do these freeze well?

The recipe is great and I thought my toddler would love these since he likes peas, but unfortunately he didn’t like it all! No matter how many times I offered him this he would just spit it out

You mentioned one would have left overs of the cream cheese/pea mixture. Any ideas on how it can be used? Can it be frozen?
